About Parku Arkeologjik Bylis

The ancient city of Bylis is located in the village of Hekal, in the province of Mallakastra, part of southern Albania. It is located on a hill 529 m above sea level and overlooks the lower valley of the Vjosa River (Aoos in antiquity) to the Adriatic Sea, Sazan Island and the Karaburun Peninsula to the west.Bylis National Archaeological Park is located 162 km away from Tirana, 35 km from the city of Fier, 10 km from the town of Ballsh and 1.5 km away from the center of Hekal village where it is located. Access roads are land and through interurban roads Fier -Tepelene, Fier-Ballsh, Gjirokastër-Klos (Mallakastër), Vlora-Klos.
The Illyrian city of Bylis is the largest in southern Illyria, with an area of 30 ha. It was founded in the years 370 – 350 b.C and has been the capital of the Byline community, part of the great province of Atintania. It included several ancient cities and the entire lower and middle Aoos River valley. To the south of Bylis are the ruins of the ancient city of Nicaea, founded in the second half of the century. V b.C and in the west two other centers. To the east are the ruins of two castles, which mark the eastern borders of this community.According to the ancient author Stefan Byzantini, Bylis was founded by Neoptolemus, son of Achilles, linking their Homeric descent to the Euboean Abantes, who settled there after the Trojan War.
