Now, faith is the guarantee of what is expected, the certainty of what is not seen. 2 Thanks to her the ancients were approved.
By faith we understand that the universe was formed by the word of God, so that what is visible did not come from what is seen.
By faith Abel offered God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain's, for which he received testimony that he was righteous, since God accepted his offering. And by faith Abel, despite being dead, still speaks.
By faith Enoch was taken out of this world without experiencing death; He was not found because God took him away, but before he was taken he received testimony that he had pleased God. 6 Actually, without faith it is impossible to please God, since anyone who approaches God has to believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
By faith Noah, warned about things not yet seen, with reverent fear built an ark to save his family. By that faith he condemned the world and became heir to the righteousness that comes through faith.
By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place that he would later receive as an inheritance, obeyed and left without knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he settled as a foreigner in the promised land, and lived in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs also of the same promise, 10 because he was waiting for the city of solid foundations, of which God is the architect and builder.
By faith Abraham, despite his advanced age and the fact that Sarah herself was barren, [a] received strength to have children, because he considered the one who had made the promise to him faithful. 12 So from this one man, already in decline, descendants were born numerous as the stars in the sky and countless as the sand on the seashore.
All of them lived by faith, and died without having received the things promised; rather, they recognized them from afar, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on earth. By expressing themselves thus, they clearly implied that they were in search of a homeland. 15 If they had been thinking about that country from which they had emigrated, they would have had the opportunity to return to it. 16 Rather, they longed for a better homeland, that is, heavenly. Therefore, God was not ashamed to be called their God, and prepared a city for them.
By faith Abraham, who had received the promises, was put to the test and offered up Isaac, his only son, 18 despite the fact that God had told him, "Your seed will be established through Isaac." [B] 19 Abraham considered that God has the power even to raise the dead, and thus, figuratively, he recovered Isaac from the dead.
By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau, anticipating what awaited them in the future.
By faith Jacob, when he was about to die, blessed each of Joseph's sons, and worshiped by leaning on the end of his staff.
By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, referred to the departure of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions about their mortal remains.
By faith Moses, a newborn, was hidden by his parents for three months, because they saw that he was a precious child, and they were not afraid of the king's edict.
By faith Moses, as an adult, gave up being called the son of Pharaoh's daughter. 25 He preferred to be mistreated with God's people than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He considered the reproach for the Messiah's sake to be a greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking to the reward. 27 By faith he left Egypt without being afraid of the king's anger, for he stood firm as if he were seeing the Unseen One. 28 By faith he celebrated the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, so that the slayer of the firstborn would not touch those of Israel.
By faith the people crossed the Red Sea as on dry land; but, when the Egyptians tried to cross it, they drowned ...
