About Guia Cemitério Consolação

Some cemeteries are losing the characteristic of places of sadness and mourning and become true places of memory and life. These spaces can be considered as cultural heritage museums, as they are full of values linked to material goods and the immaterial goods that represent them.

Consolação Cemetery, inaugurated in 1858 in São Paulo, has a vast green area amidst the hustle and bustle of Rua da Consolação, and in it the visitor finds tombs without major ornaments, but which house the remains of personalities such as Monteiro Lobato, Tarsila do Amaral, Mario de Andrade, Oswald de Andrade, Marquesa de Santos, Luiz Gama and many others. Dividing the space are also grandiose tomb artworks made by renowned sculptors such as Victor Brecheret, Galileo Emendabilli and Bruno Giorgi, commissioned by the city's most traditional families.
