About MOTHER

It was first published in Appleton's Magazine in 1906, in English, and then in Russian in 1907.

The work has been adapted into a number of films and has been translated into a lot of languages. This novel was the inspiration for Bertolt Brecht and his associates' 1932 play The Mother. Modern critics consider it Gorky's least successful novel, although they consider it his most essential novel published before 1917.

Gorky wrote the novel in 1906 while on a vacation to the United States. The novel's political goal was obvious. After Russia's first revolution was defeated in 1905, Gorky attempted to rekindle the spirit of the communist struggle by imparting the political agenda to his readers through his writing. He was attempting to instil hope in the revolutionaries in order to combat the defeatist mentality.
