The action of the novel begins in Milan in 1796, by the confidences of a French lieutenant named Robert, who tells the arrival in Milan of the armies of the Revolution, led by the young Bonaparte. These armies awaken, in a Lombard people anesthetized by Austrian tutelage, an old heroic background, and are greeted with a mirthful gaiety by the majority of Milanese.
The Marquis Del Dongo, fierce and grotesque reactionary, a supporter of Austria, is forced to welcome the victorious French soldiers, of whom Lieutenant Robert is a part.
