Follow the “American Indian Tribes” and “Green Book Sites” itineraries to help you discover more about African-Americans and Native Americans who traveled and/or lived along Route 66. Also included is an itinerary that will lead you to a quality-assured set of recommended vintage motels. And, of course, there’s an itinerary to help you find classic points of interest along Route 66 in each state.

Here’s a bit more about each of these unique Itineraries included with the Route 66 Adventures app.

Classic Route 66 –Route 66 associations and byway programs recommended must-see destinations across all eight Route 66 states for this Route 66 adventure. More than 130 sites, classic eateries, vintage service stations, and unique attractions are included in the Classic Route 66 itinerary. A Route 66 trip is all about the journey – and this itinerary guides you to some of the road’s classic highlights. More sites will be added as the Route 66 Adventures app continues to be developed.

Green Book Sites – Route 66 is often referred to as the road to freedom and opportunity. Truth be told, however, this was not the case for everyone who travelled the historic route. During the Jim Crow era, African-Americans did not enjoy freedom and were not provided the same opportunities as whites. When they did travel, African-Americans often relied on the Negro Motorist’s Green Book to find places throughout the country where they could safely shop, eat, and spend the night. The Route 66 Adventure’s Green Book itinerary lists the sites of over 350 cafes, restaurants, rooming houses and hotels that welcomed African-Americans traveling Route 66. Sites listed in this itinerary are based on research conducted by the National Park Service. The Road Ahead plans to enhance the descriptions of these sites in future updates.

Vintage Route 66 Motels – Looking for a place to rest your head? This special itinerary includes 11 quality-assured, vintage properties that comprise the Road Ahead’s “Route 66 Motel Collection.” Each one qualified for inclusion based on four-star (or more) reviews from Yelp, Google, and/or Travelocity. These properties reflect the authentic experience of traveling Route 66. From their faithfully restored buildings to the welcoming spirits of their owner/operators, you’ll be glad you stopped for the night. The Road Ahead plans to update as more properties are added to the Route 66 Motel Collection.

American Indian Tribal Sites – Among the stories of dozens of groups of people that traveled or lived along the road from Chicago to LA, is the story of Native Americans. In the past, traveling Route 66 presented a stereotyped image of American Indians. This unique itinerary introduces travelers to destinations that will provide a more authentic experience of the tribes living along Route 66. The American Indian Alaska Native Tourism Association contributed to the development of this itinerary of over 30 sites and attractions found on or adjacent to Route 66 where it travels through Native American Tribal lands.
