German prepositions can be divided by their
1. types and
2. grammatical cases they are used with.

Prepositions by types:
By types, German prepositions can be divided into:
locative prepositions (prepositions of place/location),
temporal prepositions (prepositions of time),
causal prepositions (prepositions that describe a cause) and
modal prepositions (prepositions that describe mode of procedure or the manner of taking effect).

Prepositions by cases:
The most efficient way to learn German prepositions is to memorize them according to the grammatical case they require.
1. Prepositions with accusative or dative case (two-way prepositions)
