HWC refers to interactions between wild animals and humans where the former tends to inflict physical or economic damages upon people near their habitats.
The losses to villagers usually happen in two ways – one, wild animals kill the livestock, and two, they raid agricultural land and destroy crops. With innovation as the driving force the Uttarakhand Forest Department is leveraging technology to address this issue. The ‘Wildlife Uttarakhand’ mobile application enables villagers to report HWC incidents on the spot with relevant information including geolocation, nature of incident, photo and video evidence, application form among others. The applicant can also track the status of the application through the app and need not visit forest department offices for the same, thereby increasing efficiency.
