Black Friday is the day with the biggest deals of the year.

What is Black Friday?

The term "Black Friday" was actually first associated with the financial crisis that was occurring in the United States. Two Wall Street exchange financiers Jay Gould and Jim Fisk together bought a significant amount of US gold in hopes that the overall price would skyrocket and, in turn, they could sell it for big profits.

On Friday, September 24, 1869, the gold market in the United States collapsed and the shares of Fisk and Gould both bankrupt. This is when the name "Black Friday" was born.

Black Friday story

It was not until later years that Black Friday was associated with the day after Thanksgiving, celebrated in the United States, and it was Philadelphia police officers who first linked the name of Black Friday to the post-Day period. Thanksgiving in the 50s.

Large crowds of tourists and shoppers came to town after Thanksgiving to attend the Army-Navy soccer game, creating traffic jams, chaos, and shoplifting opportunities. Philadelphia city police officers were unable to take the day off from work and instead had to work long shifts to control disasters, so they used the term Black Friday to refer to it.

As the name spread throughout Philadelphia, some of the city's merchants and reinforcements disliked the negative connotations and tried to change it to "Big Friday" but were unsuccessful. Actually, it was too late, Black Friday was released in print through The American Philatelist magazine in 1966.

By 1980, the term Black Friday was already commonly known across the United States, and retailers soon linked it to their post-Thanksgiving sales.

As of today, Black Friday is the largest shopping event of the year in the United States, where many stores reduce their prices extremely in a range of products in order to increase profits and start the holiday season.

When is Black Friday celebrated?

As we discussed earlier, President Roosevelt made the Thanksgiving celebration move to the last Thursday in November and continues to this day to this day.

Black Friday would be the following day each year (in this way you can calculate it every year that passes), so, for 2020, Black Friday is scheduled to be celebrated next Friday, November 27 (11/27/20 ).
