Reggae is a genre of music that was originally developed in Jamaica at the end of the 60s. Even though it is often used extensively to refer to almost all types of Jamaican music, the term reggae more precisely refers to the particular style of music that appears following the development of ska and rocksteady.
Reggae is based on a rhythmic style characterized by accents on off-beat or syncopation, which is called skank. Reggae generally has a slower tempo than ska or rocksteady. Usually in reggae there is accentuation in the second and fourth beats in each bar, with guitar rhythm also emphasizing the third beat; or hold the chord on the second tap until the fourth beat is played. Especially the "third beat", in addition to the tempo and complex bass playing that distinguishes rocksteady reggae, although rocksteady combines these updates separately.
