Every day each Portuguese produces an average of 1.32 kg of waste, contributing to an annual production of 4.75 million tons of urban waste for which we have to give a destination. The diversity of materials, packaging and equipment that we have at home, composed of a very varied range of components, makes it difficult for us to decide when they become "junk" and we want them to be recycled.
In fact, this difficult task is reflected in the numbers, only 16.5% of the total waste produced in Portugal is sent to the ecopoints, a very low value that will make it difficult to separate the different materials and refer them to recycling. it will be reflected in the rate of treatment of the garbage, that is to say the less we separate the more we pay.
On the other hand, the fact that we buy more and more packaged products, have little response to reuse our garbage or we can not recover the equipment, every year the amount of garbage we produce increases.
Given this, our current reality is a need to treat 83.5% of all mixed waste, from which we have to withdraw materials to recycle and valorize, having before us a goal of recycling of 50%, until 2022. It is a task almost impossible because currently our recycling is in the order of 38%.
In the future, even more ambitious goals await us. By 2035 we have to reduce landfill from 32% to only 10% and increase recycling to 65%.
We know that separating household waste is an arduous task given the variety of waste with different destinations. Many should not be placed in ecopoints and sometimes it is not easy to see which ones are covered by this system.
Other waste streams have been developed in Portugal in order to provide a suitable destination for several wastes, but this information is sometimes not available to the citizen.
Quercus wants to help all the Portuguese in this task, together we can increase recycling rates and reduce our impact on the planet. WasteApp helps you separate waste and find the right destination for a wide range of municipal waste produced.
You can check the application on your mobile phone (ios or android) or computer and search the nearest destinations for a wide variety of waste separated by about 50 different types of waste. The application is very easy to use and allows you to quickly find the location closest to where you deliver the trash you own at home. You can also clarify the doubts you have about the waste that you should or should not put in the ecoponto and the various waste streams that exist in Portugal.
Find out the latest news related to waste collection campaigns and other news through the news published by the Waste Working Group of Quercus - National Association for Nature Conservation.
You can also help us if you know of other places that receive materials to enhance or recycle that are not yet in our application. We are very pleased to receive your contribution and to be able to improve our app with new collection points.
