Prayer is the pillar of religion and no excuse is accepted for leaving it as long as he is able to perform it. It is not waived for any sane adult man, while it is waived for a woman in the state of menstruation and childbirth, and she is not ordered to spend it after she purifies.

One of the punishments for neglecting prayer is that it is a subject of disagreement among scholars, some of the jurists, until many of the jurists said that he repents for the one who abandons prayer. The judge after asking for repentance and explaining the importance of prayer and its imposition for him (the Kuwaiti Encyclopedia of Fiqh 27/53-54).

One of the great status of prayer in Islam is that it was imposed on the greatest journey known to mankind, namely the journey of Isra and Mi’raj. Prayer is the difference between a Muslim and an infidel:

On the authority of Anas bin Malik, may God be pleased with him, he said: “The prayer was imposed on the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, on the night of my captivity, with fifty prayers, then it was reduced until it was made five, then it was called, O Muhammad, he does not change what I have and that you have this five fifty.” (Narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim).
On the authority of Buraydah, may God be pleased with him, that the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “The covenant between us and them is prayer, so whoever abandons it has disbelieved.”
On the authority of Abdullah bin Amr, may God be pleased with them, on the authority of the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, that he mentioned the prayer one day and said: “Whoever preserves it, it will be a light, proof and salvation for him on the Day of Resurrection. And Abi Bin Khalaf.” (Reported by Ibn Hibban in his Sahih).
On the authority of Rabia bin Ka’b Al-Aslami, he said: “I used to spend the night with the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, and I brought him his ablution and his needs, and he said to me: “Ask me.” I said: “I ask you to accompany you in heaven.” prostrating yourself a lot.” (Narrated by Muslim).
Al-Nisa’i narrated on the authority of Anas that the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “Women and perfumes were endeared to me, and the comfort of my eyes was made in prayer.”
Abu Dawud included in his Sunan on the authority of Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-Aas that the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “Order your children to pray when they are seven years old, and beat them for it when they are ten years old, and separate them in their beds.”
On the authority of Abu Hurairah that the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “The first thing that a servant will be held accountable for on the Day of Resurrection is his prayer.
And on the authority of Anas bin Malik, may God be pleased with him, on the authority of the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, who said: “The first thing that a servant will be held accountable for is his prayer. God, the Blessed and Exalted, says to the angels: Look at the prayer of My servant. Do you find a voluntary prayer for My servant, so that his prayer should be completed from his voluntary prayer, then the deeds will be taken according to that?” (Al-Darimi included it in his Sunan)

The pillar and the obligatory meaning are the same, which is what the obligatory prayer is not valid without.
