Artificial nutrition plays a key role in supporting therapies for patients in intensive care. The main objective of artificial nutrition in the critical patient is the control of catabolism. The secondary objectives, in relation to the temporal evolution of the disease, are the prevention of malnutrition and the reconstitution of the lean mass.
All patients with a planned hospital stay of more than 2-3 days must undergo a nutritional risk assessment, which is carried out within 48 hours after the patient enters the ward by the physician through the physical examination, the assessment of comorbidities and the function of the gastrointestinal tract. On the basis of the data collected and the current clinical picture, the doctor in charge identifies whether the patient needs an artificial feeding program or not. All patients with high nutritional risk must enter an early nutritional support program.
The purpose of this app is to provide IT support to the prescription of the nutritional program (based on scientific evidence) to the critical patient, by the intensivist doctor. It also provides support for choosing the route of administration, the caloric requirement, and the timing for reaching the therapeutic regime.
