REsPoNSo
App for the fight against ghost fishing and waste at sea in Sicily
REsPoNSo (Reduction of peach fishing in Sicily) allows to identify areas in which there are abandoned nets and waste on the ecologically most relevant and delicate seabed of the Sicilian seas to evaluate the possible removal and restore space for biodiversity and the recovery of marine environments.
Due to the poor biodegradability of the synthetic polymers of which they are composed, abandoned or lost fishing gears continue their fishing activity undisturbed, a phenomenon better known as "ghost fishing", interacting and impacting also habitats and species of conservation interest such as corals and gorgonians.
The project also deals with the recovery of marine litter lost at sea following multiple land and marine activities.
REsPoNSo (Reduction of Peach Fishing in Sicily) is a project financed by the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies through the European Fund for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (EMFF 2014-2020 - Measure 1.40).
The project is led by Anton Dohrn Zoological Station - National Institute of Biology, Ecology and Marine Biotechnology - Sicily Headquarters, with the partnership of WWF Italy, Marevivo Sicilia, CO.GE.COOPESCA of Portorosa, CO.GE.PA. di Licata and CO.GE.PA. of Lampedusa and Linosa.
