Bring the solar system down to earth with the Our Place in Space Augmented Reality app.
Centered around an epic scale model of the solar system designed by the artist Oliver Jeffers with scientist Professor Stephen Smartt and a creative team led by Nerve Centre, the Our Place in Space app allows you to walk through a scaled version of our solar system over 10km. At our scale of 591 million to 1, the Sun is 2.35m in diameter and Pluto only 4mm!
You can use the app as you walk the Our Place in Space sculpture trail from April to October 2022 (in locations across Northern Ireland and Cambridge) or from anywhere else in the world.
The app will show your relative distance as you journey through the solar system, while you discover facts about space and find some of Oliver Jeffers’ characters. The app also includes a cosmic view on conflict, looking back in time at ‘Us and Them’ through human history. Finally, add your own star to the universe to mark your experience.
Parents and guardians, please supervise younger children as they use the app.
Important:
- This app uses augmented reality.
- No personal data store is stored or transmitted during this process.
- Users are asked to consent that "I have read and agree to the terms and conditions".
- When prompted, users must click "OK" to allow the app to have permission to use the camera and locations services.
Our Place in Space – Commissioned by Belfast City Council as part of UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK
