December 31st is called New Year's Eve. But where does this name come from and why are we celebrating New Year's Eve? This is actually not a Christian festival, but has pagan roots. The ancient Teutons believed that in the darker season of the year, i.e. between the 25th
December 6th and January 6th, their god Wotan did bad things. They especially feared New Year's Eve, so they made a lot of noise to drive away the darkness and evil spirits.
