December 6th and January 6th, their god Wotan did bad things. They especially feared New Year's Eve, so they made a lot of noise to drive away the darkness and evil spirits.

That's why we're now putting on fireworks, which goes back to this old tradition. Even before 1582, the last day of the year was not 31.

but December 24th. This year it was moved to December 31st on the anniversary of the Pope's death on New Year's Eve.
