TDU was founded in April 1996 by 28 entrepreneurs of Turkish origin in Berlin. The association now has 280 members. About ten percent of the members are of German origin. The members of the TDU are active in almost all economic sectors and thus represent the entire spectrum of Berlin's entrepreneurial spectrum of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The economic activities of companies of Turkish origin in Berlin have reached a high level. In 2008 there were an estimated 9,000 small and medium-sized businesses of Turkish origin in Berlin, employing around 29,000 people. According to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, these companies generate annual sales of around 3.5 billion euros.
TDU's commitment is to support the Turkish (business) community and to take a stand on economic, political, social and cultural issues and to actively participate in them. In order to achieve this, the TDU regularly organizes events on current topics and strives for an open, constructive-critical dialogue with institutions, other associations and political parties.
Within Berlin, the topics that directly affect the members of the TDU and Turkish society are discussed with the responsible offices of the Senate, the IHK, the Chamber of Crafts, the districts, the training centers and other organizations and important projects are initiated.
Through its diverse activities, the TDU forms a hub in the Turkish community in Berlin-Brandenburg. It has become a contact point for people from different social circles at home and abroad.
