The history of Argentina is the chronology of events that occurred from the beginning of the original human settlement in the current territory of the Argentine Republic to the present day.
It begins with the oldest vestiges of human beings on Argentine soil, those that were detected in the southern tip of Patagonia, around 13,000 years ago. The first agro-pottery civilizations were established in the Andean northwest from the 18th century BC. C.
The written history of what is now Argentina, began with the records of the German chronicler Ulrico Schmidl in the expedition of Juan Díaz de Solís in 1516 to the Río de la Plata, a fact that anticipates the Spanish domination that would prevail in part of this region. . In 1776, the Spanish crown created the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, an agglutinating entity of territories from which, with the May Revolution of 1810, a gradual process of formation of several autonomous states - called provinces - or independent, would begin, between they the one that took the name of United Provinces of the Río de la Plata. With the declaration of independence on July 9, 1816 and the military defeat of the Spanish Empire in 1824, sovereign existence was formalized. After a prolonged period of civil wars, between 1853 and 1860 a federal republic was formed with the name of the Argentine Republic. Through wars against the Mapuche, Tehuelche, Ranquel, Wichi, and Kom peoples, known as Conquista del Desierto and Conquista del Chaco, the Argentine Republic took possession of the Chaco and Pampas plains and eastern Patagonia, forming its current territory, the eighth most extensive in the world.
Between 1862 and 1930 a long period of constitutional stability passed, in which due to a great migratory wave coming mainly from Italy and Spain, the population grew five times faster than the world. The introduction of universal suffrage for men in 1912, completed with the recognition of the right to vote for women in 1951, gave rise to a series of governments elected by popular vote, which alternated in power with military dictatorships and fraudulent governments to from 1930. After the defeat in 1982 in the Falklands War against England, the last dictatorship collapsed, its members being prosecuted for serious crimes against humanity. In 1983 an extensive period of democracy began, which continues today.
