Immerse yourself in the mines of the medieval mining settlement in Dippoldiswalde, the oldest part of the UNESCO World Heritage Montanregion Erzgebirge / Krušnohoří. Since 2008 these have been researched by the State Office for Archeology in Saxony. A visit to the mines that are unique in Europe under today's city is not possible for safety reasons. Nevertheless, experience the miners up close in narrow shafts underground or look over the shoulders of the mining archaeologists during their fascinating research. The free location-based application "Montanarchäologie in Dippoldiswalde" takes you virtually through the world of medieval mining. You can digitally explore the impressive mining world on your own along a signposted mining educational trail.
It starts at MiBERZ, the museum for medieval mining in the Ore Mountains. There you can take a closer look at the labyrinth of the mines under your feet in 3D with the additional free app Medieval MinesAR. We continue to the mines under the bus station - virtually, of course! Like a roller coaster, you “drive” into a mine as a miner (yes, women and children have also toiled). Well informed, you are finally ready to drive into the pit under Glashütte Straße all by yourself. With the app Medieval MinesAR your way leads to a "chew" over a shaft that leads you into the world down there. The walk through the medieval silver mine has some surprises in store for you! And what did life look like after work? At Obertorplatz, the mining archaeologists found astonishing insights into the world of the miners: in addition to chewing and living houses, there were many different workshops, but also toy horses and receipts for beer. Just take a look around yourself in 3D animations and panoramic shots of the medieval mining settlement of Dippoldiswalde.
The application "Montanarchäologie in Dippoldiswalde" was developed between 2017 and 2020 within the international project "VirtualArch - Visualize to Valorize".
The project was funded by the European Regional Development Fund of the European Union, supported by the Federal Transnational Cooperation program.
Technical note: The Medieval MinesAR app requires ARCore-compatible devices.
