About Hinter Schloss und Riegel

Waldeck Castle gave the house and the country of Waldeck its name. The family of the counts and later princes of Waldeck ruled until 1918. The mighty castle from the 13th and 14th centuries, which today overlooks the Edersee, has not served as the seat of government since the early 18th century. This was relocated to the new, splendid residence town of Arolsen. Instead, the castle was used as a prison from 1734 to 1868. Discover in these exciting exhibitions what life was like in a prison in the 18th and 19th centuries. The exhibition tells of punishments and executions, of prisoners and their fate and of everyday life in the castle. But it also tells of how a new and milder form of treatment for offenders became established in the course of the 19th century.
