About Start Me Up by SJA

Have all the tools you need to save a life from sudden cardiac arrest at your fingertips! Start Me Up BC is a simple and comprehensive 9-1-1 connected app that helps empowers bystanders through its automated external defibrillator (AED) locator and comprehensive first aid tips. Made by St. John Ambulance BC & Yukon, a provincially trusted first aid and safety charity.

The AEDs located within Start Me Up BC includes the one-of-a-kind publicly accessible defibrillator (PAD) stands created by St. John Ambulance, which are community AED stands that are open for anyone to open and use on a 24/7 basis, whether they are a trained professional or not. Other than the PAD stands, users can see all and any other AEDs that are closest to them. These can be in locations such as community centres, offices, malls, and more. As news AEDs are placed in the community, either by St. John Ambulance or others, they will be added and listed in the app. Anyone can use an AED!

Start Me Up BC also displays other lifesaving resources available at AED locations such as first aid kits and Naloxone.

Other features include:

• Ability to call 9-1-1 within the app.
• First aid techniques and tips! The app will explain how to use an AED, how to do CPR, how to recognize a sudden cardiac arrest and more.
• SOS call-out to St. John Ambulance’s trained volunteer first responders. If you witness a cardiac arrest or other first aid emergency, you can use this call-out and if any volunteers are nearby, they will jump to the scene to help until health officials arrive.
• Locator to find the nearest hospital.

What is an AED?

In the event of sudden cardiac arrest, access to an AED can mean the difference between life or death. Despite their importance, not everyone knows of or would recognize these lifesaving devices. An AED is a small, portable, easy to use device that delivers a shock (an electrical current) through the chest wall of a person whose heart has stopped beating. This shock works to potentially stop an irregular or non-existent heartbeat and allow a normal rhythm to resume. The majority of AEDs have a voice-guided system that takes the user through easy-to-follow steps, supported by pictures. Some AEDs even provide CPR instructions.

The story behind Start Me Up BC

The team at St. John Ambulance BC & Yukon is a dedicated group of health and safety experts. The organization has operated in BC since 1911, training communities in first aid, CPR, and AED use, and providing hundreds of thousands of hours of community service through their Medical First Responder, Therapy Dog, Community Transfer, and Youth programs.

The Start Me Up BC app is a tool stemming from the Start Me Up BC campaign, which was created out of the apparent need for more public AEDs. Through the campaign, St. John Ambulance aims to place 1000 publicly accessible PAD stands across the province. These stands can be placed anywhere; whether it’s at a beach, park, or outside a workplace, and will be left unlocked, able to access on a 24/7 basis.
Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, at any time. With each PAD stand placement, more BC communities will be empowered and have the tools they need to save lives. Learn more about Start Me Up BC at [website when available].
