Le Rouge et le Noir, subtitled Chronique du xixe siècle, then Chronique de 1830, is a novel written by Stendhal, first published in Paris by Levasseur on 13 November 18301, although the original edition2 mentions the date of 1831. This is his second novel, after Armance.
The novel is divided into two parts: the first part retraces Julien Sorel's career in the provinces, in a small town called Verrières, in Franche-Comté then in Besançon, and more precisely his entry into the Rênals, and his passion for Mme de Rênal, as well as his stay in a seminary; the second part deals with the hero's life in Paris as secretary to the Marquis de La Mole, and the passion he has with his daughter, Mathilde (Wikipedia summary).
