About Confined Space App

In a context of lack of clear and comprehensive definitions and established risk prevention practices in confined and / or suspected pollution environments, alongside increasingly growing numbers of mostly fatal injuries, a tool is created that wants to overcome the gaps regulations and provide a practical and simple support for the identification and recognition of these environments.
This tool is the Confined Space App (CSA), whose purpose is, precisely, to help employers to define with what probability the environments in which their workers, or themselves, find themselves having to enter to perform tasks of maintenance, cleaning, inspection, or other, can be considered confined or suspected of pollution and present problems related to recovery in the event of an accident.
The app was created by the Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Bologna, with the support of Banca delle Soluzioni - Confined Environments (http://safetyengineering.din.unibo.it/banca-delle-soluzioni), thanks to the co-financing obtained from INAIL Regione Emilia Romagna, through the 2016 Regional Call.
Therefore, CSA does not want to be a tool for risk assessment, nor does it want to replace it, but it is a help to identify the presence of a confined environment and the relative criticalities due to its characteristics, in terms of Geometry, Access, Configuration Internal, Atmosphere, which, according to the OSHA classification, represent the four main categories of confinement.
The app can be downloaded for free but includes two access levels: one open and freely available, which presents the demo version and an archive of evaluations to be consulted; the second one presents the complete functions with the possibility of obtaining the final result.
For each category, the user is asked several questions to identify the characteristics of the place. The final result is a numerical value, the result of a calculation algorithm based on the different responses of the user, which identifies the possibility of being or not in the presence of a confined environment and / or suspected pollution.
The application informs the user about the presence of confinement for each category analyzed.
In addition, for each category of confinement, the respective critical issues and warnings to be taken into account before entering the environment being analyzed are highlighted, also with respect to the difficulty of recovery and rescue.
