The new comedy or El café is a satirical comedy in two acts by Leandro Fernández de Moratín premiered on February 7, 1792 at the Teatro del Príncipe in Madrid. Its subject matter is the criticism of the heroic drama of its time and it is written in prose, something exceptional at this time, and which only had as an illustrious precedent El delincuente honrado (1774), a tear-jerking comedy by Jovellanos.
Moratín had La comedia nueva written at the end of 1791 as a short metatheatrical piece whose object was the criticism of the effective contemporary historical drama. At the same time, the work promoted the dramaturgy defended by the illustrated ones, which advocated respect for the three dramatic units (action, space and time) and the primacy of the characters of the characters over the complicated entanglement and the effects of tramoya on which the most popular theater was based in the 18th century
