Johor Bahru is the southernmost state capital in Peninsular Malaysia. Due to its location, Johor Bahru is a melting pot for various types of food and delicacies. There are Javanese, Bugis, Banjar, Padang, Indigenous, Indian and Pakistani influences. Popular foods originated in Johor Bahru through this ethnic diversity include Nasi Goreng, Nasi lemak, Nasi Padang, Soto, Ketupat, Mee Rebus, Masak Lemak, Kari, Sayur Air, Sambal Tumis Petai, Apam Balik, Sate, Sambal Goreng and Sambal Belacan. Most kosher food centered around the city of Johor Baru and Kampung Melayu, Majidee.

In the late 70s, tempeh and fried tofu were also baked, as well as food with Indian and Pakistani influences became an option with stalls and restaurants in public places. We can buy Roti Canai (Paratha), Nasi Baryani, Tosai and Chapati for breakfast and lunch. Due to the improved transportation system, food from the east coast such as keropok lekor became known. Due to the many people who started cooking and dabbling in the culinary field, we began to see the presence of western cuisine in the late 90s in the menu. This phenomenon continued until the first decade of 2000 or the new millennium. After this first decade, Arabic cuisine began to emerge. Nasi Mandy, Nasi Maqlubah, Shawarma and various middle eastern dishes are starting to sprout around Johor Bahru.

Thus, this food diversity makes Johor Bahru a city with a high and famous food diversity… Furthermore with the help of technology and apps, now this variety of food can reach no matter where you are around Johor Bahru.
