The Index of Air Quality and Health Risks informs the population about the state of air quality (good, acceptable, bad, very bad and extremely bad), also about the level of associated risk (probable damage to health , depending on whether the risk is low, moderate, high, very high or extremely high) and the recommendations of the actions to be taken (measures to reduce exposure); that is, it is sought that the information received by the population not only refers to air quality at a given time, but also allows it to act with opportunity to protect its health, which was specified in the objective of this Official Standard Mexicana (NOM-172-SEMARNAT-2019), without modifying the original purpose of said Index.
