The Bible is a collection of religious texts or scriptures considered sacred in Christianity, Judaism, Samaritanism, and many other religions. The Bible is an anthology, a compilation of texts in various formats, originally written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Koine Greek. These texts include genres such as instructions, stories, poems, and prophecies. The collection of material accepted as part of the Bible by a particular religious tradition or community is called the biblical canon. Although believers in the Bible generally consider it to be a product of divine inspiration, there are many different ways to understand what it means and interpret the text.
Religious books were compiled into various official collections by various religious groups. The oldest contained the first five books of the Bible. In Hebrew it is called the Torah, and in Greek it is called the Pentateuch (meaning five books). The second oldest part was the Story History and Prophecy Collection (Nevi'im). The third collection (Ketuvim) contains a history of psalms, proverbs and stories. Tanakh is another name for the Hebrew Bible, which consists of the first letters of the three parts of the Hebrew Scriptures: Torah ("Teaching"), Nevi'im ("Prophets"), and Ketuvim ("Books") . The Masoretic text is a medieval version of the Tanakh written in Hebrew and Aramaic and is considered the authoritative text of the Hebrew Scriptures by modern Rabbinic Judaism. Septuagint is the Koine Greek translation of the Tanakh of the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC (BC). It mostly overlaps with the Hebrew Scriptures.
Christianity began as an offshoot of Judaism, using the Septuagint as the basis for the Old Testament. The early church continued the Jewish tradition of writing and incorporating what they considered inspired and authoritative religious writings. The Gospels, Pauline Epistles, and other texts were soon integrated into the New Testament.
With estimated total sales of over 5 billion copies, The Bible is the best-selling publication of all time. It has had a huge impact on Western culture and history, and on cultures around the world. Studying it through criticism of the Bible has indirectly influenced culture and history as well. The Bible is now translated or translated into about half the world's languages.
