About StoMakker

What is a stoma?
A stoma is a piece of intestine that is brought out through an opening in the abdomen and is attached to the skin. You get a stoma if the faeces or urine can no longer leave your body through the natural route. For example, with inflammation, congenital abnormalities or with tumors and polyps. Usually a stoma is created on the large intestine, the small intestine or the ureters.

Who is this app for?
The mobile app “StoMakker” has been specially developed for children aged 6 to 18 with a stoma. StoMakker helps children of different ages to be as well prepared as possible for the operation to place a stoma. It also helps children to get used to having a stoma as quickly as possible and to deal with it better.
The app can only be used via a unique personal registration code. This code is provided to the child by a care provider from the hospital, with the consent of the parents or guardians (under 12 years of age, above 12 years of age with the consent / at the request of the child itself).

What does this app do?
Information: first of all, the app offers texts, images and videos about getting a stoma and about caring for and dealing with a stoma. The texts are adapted to the age that the child enters when registering, so that the child always learns about his or her stoma in understandable language. The lyrics are also recorded and can always be listened to.
Milestones: Through milestones that are released based on the entered surgery date and push notifications, children are guided through the process of getting a stoma and recovery afterwards. Milestones can be ticked off when they have been achieved, for this you get points that you can spend in the StoMakker game.

Games and quizzes: The app also contains fun and informative quizzes that help children learn about their stoma in a playful way. With the quizzes you earn points and you end up on a scoreboard. In addition, there is the StoMakker game for children under 12: here you take care of a doll with a stoma! You can empty his/her stoma, feed him, but also dress him/her. NB! This does cost points that you have to earn through the use of the app. Can you keep your StoMakker healthy and happy?

Chat: the app also offers children with a stoma contact with fellow sufferers through a built-in chat function. Children can indicate whether they want to chat with others or not.

Stoma passport: on holiday and do you have to tell customs that you have a stoma? This is possible with the built-in stoma passport: you can tell that you have a stoma in about 20 languages!

Stories: Kids involved in developing the app have shared their stories. Read how they experienced having a stoma, how it went when they went back to school and how they are doing with sports now.

Medical Device
The app is CE marked as a class 1 medical device. The CE number is: NL-CA002-2022-68767
