The Better Healthy App supports patients after cancer with a push to live healthier: more exercise, drink less alcohol and healthier and less high-calorie food.
Better Health is an initiative of the Radboud UMC. Better Health is based on scientific knowledge about cancer, prevention and behavioral change.
Every year, more than 100,000 people in the Netherlands hear that they have cancer. 700,000 people in the Netherlands already live with cancer. Many patients want to know what they can do themselves to improve their prospects and quality of life. That is more than most people think. For a number of forms of cancer we already know that a healthy lifestyle (more exercise, no alcohol, a healthy weight, sufficient vegetables and fruit and of course no smoking) improves the prognosis.
The Better Healthy App helps to form healthier habits. By moving more - whether it is exercising, or always taking the stairs instead of the elevator, drinking no or less alcohol, and eating healthier and less caloric. Quitting smoking is not supported in the app, but tips are given for finding responsible help with stopping smoking.
The app offers:
• three healthy lifestyles to work on for 30 days
• knowledge about what is demonstrably healthy
• a tool to determine your own action plan yourself
• Timeline to keep track of whether a healthier life succeeds
• short news reports with facts about lifestyle and cancer prognosis
• tips from other users to make a healthy lifestyle easier to sustain
• linking to responsible websites for more information
• updates if more scientifically sound knowledge is available
However, much more research is needed to determine the effect on the prognosis for all forms of cancer. The Radboudumc stimulates from the Expertise Center for Cancer Prevention that the relationship between a healthy lifestyle and cancer prognosis is investigated and that what is known is also shared with doctors and patients.
