About Enciclopedia Kakataibo

This interactive application presents more than 1200 species of animals with names in the Kakataibo language of Amazonian Peru, including biological identifications and translations into standard and vernacular Spanish and English. Encyclopedic information on identification, ecology and cultural value is included for most of the entries. Sound files are associated with each entry, and most entries are illustrated with one or more drawings or photographs. This educational application is designed primarily to assist the Kakataibo to preserve their language and to facilitate the intergenerational transmission of traditional ecological knowledge, which is essential for the Kakataibos’ daily subsistence and the ecological conservation of their ancestral territory. For those who are not Kakataibos, this biological encyclopedia will be of for learning about the highly diverse fauna and flora of the Amazonian ecosystem. The illustrations were drawn by Matses artist Guillermo Nëcca Pëmen Mënquë under the auspices of Acate Amazon Conservation. This application was produced within the framework of the project “Interdisciplinary Research Program on Amazonian Linguistic Diversity” financed by the Max Plank Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Estación Científica Chana, and the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, coordinated by Roberto Zariquiey.
