With the SWIMWAY FishExplorer you can determine fish in the Wadden Sea and its tributaries and report your observations.
The populations of many species of fish in the Wadden Sea have seen a dramatic decline in recent decades. A fundamental understanding of the crucial processes and procedures is often still lacking, which hinders effective and efficient fish protection. Therefore fish experts from Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands have developed protection goals for fish, the so-called Trilateral Fish Targets, which were adopted at the 11th Trilateral Intergovernmental Conference 2010 in Sylt as part of the Wadden Sea Plan (2010). This includes
- Viable populations and a natural reproduction of typical Wadden Sea fish species
- Occurrence and frequency of fish species according to the natural dynamics under (a) biotic conditions
- Favorable living conditions for endangered fish species
- Preservation of the diversity of natural habitats as the basis for spawning opportunities and the growth of juvenile fish
- Maintaining and restoring continuity for fish migrating between the Wadden Sea and inland water.
