Who poisoned the rich Emily Inglethorpe and how did the murderer penetrate and escape from her locked room? Suspects abound in the quaint town of Styles St. Mary, from the heiress's fawning new husband to her two stepchildren, her volatile housekeeper and a beautiful nurse who works at a hospital dispensary. On the day she was murdered, Emily Inglethorp was heard arguing with someone, probably her husband, Alfred, or her stepson, John. Afterward, she seemed quite distraught and apparently made a new testament, which no one can find. No one can explain how or when the strychnine was administered to Ms. Inglethorp. At the top of Poirot's suspect list are: John Cavendish, the eldest stepson; Mary Cavendish, his wife; Lawrence Cavendish, the youngest stepson; Evelyn Howard, Mrs. Inglethorpe's partner; Cynthia Murdoch, his protégé; and Dr. Bauerstein, a mysterious stranger who lives in Essex. Everyone has reasons and opportunities, but only Poirot can discover the truth.
