About Teatro Romano de Guadix

The Roman Theater of Guadix, due to its characteristics, is comparable in importance to other renowned theaters, such as Mérida or Cartagena. However, it has less public visibility, due to its state of conservation, having been destroyed and looted in ancient times. This application, developed by the Universities of Granada and Cádiz at the request of the Guadix City Council, aims to enhance the value of the monument, allowing a 3D reconstruction of the Roman theater to be shown through Mixed Reality, so that the user can see it as it was in ancient times.

You can enjoy the virtual reconstruction of the monument whether you are in the real environment of the theater (in the vicinity of the Guadix archaeological site), or from any other geographical location, thanks to the 2 operating modes of the application:

• If you are in the real environment of the theater, the application will offer you different points located in its vicinity, from which you will be able to contemplate and tour the virtual reconstruction right where it was originally, anchored on the remains of the site itself.

• If you are in any other geographic location, you can also take a virtual tour of the theater to see what it was like in ancient times. To do this, the application allows you to freely indicate the point from which you want to contemplate it or start exploring it, and you will be fully immersed in the 3D model.

The application makes use of the Mixed Reality techniques provided by Google's ARcore library, which allow a great sensation of immersiveness. These techniques use the images provided by the mobile device's camera to build a dynamic map of the environment that surrounds the user, allowing any type of rotation or displacement to be detected. In this way, the user can walk through the virtual model of the theater while moving through the real world in a natural way.

For those mobile devices whose technical characteristics do not support the ARcore library, the application uses Mixed Reality techniques through the use of the gyroscopic sensor, which allows the virtual model to be viewed from static points, but not to move around it. Finally, on those mobile devices that do not have a gyroscopic sensor, it will be possible to rotate the view from which the model is viewed by sliding your finger across the device screen.
