CERDEIRA VILLAGE - The rebirth of a village

Hidden in a small valley at 700m altitude, Cerdeira is a secular shale village in danger of disappearing after the abandonment of agricultural activity in the middle of the 20th century. About 300 years ago, the village was built by brave people, farmers who took their livelihood from it, and who, despite having left in search of a better life for their families, regularly come to visit with their affection.

Today, the Cerdeira has new stories to tell of new inhabitants that with persistence and will give life and meaning to this place, men and women who have wisely restored the houses and added the comfort deserved in the twenty-first century, guests who choose the village to spend their holidays here and artists from all over the world who are looking for inspiration. At the moment, it is part of the 27 villages that integrate the network of the Shale Villages.

Since 1988 Kerstin Thomas and Bernard Langer have been recovering some of the houses in the village of Cerdeira. Later in 2000, Natalia and José Serra, friends they had met in Coimbra, joined in the recovery effort. Gradually, the project was gaining form and meaning and, from 2006, the first arts festival "Elementos à Solta" began to be organized. In 2012, the Cerdeira Village project starts, which in 2018 became Cerdeira - Home for Creativity.
