Benoit Mandelbrot, recalling the moment of discovery of the fractal, said that it looked like the discovery of a new planet, as if he was peering into a pale cathode ray tube that served as a monitor for a low-power computer in one of the IBM basements, looked at the porthole of a spaceship or telescope like Galileo . And I saw the world invisible until now. And indeed - there are mathematical objects and this is undoubtedly a product of our mind and a figment of imagination, but nevertheless, who will challenge the reality of the fact that there is a number, a ball, an equator, a pole ..? Never in life without encountering anything of the above in their material incarnation, we nonetheless build our theory of reality by referring to these objects as if no one doubts the illusion of their nature.
The idea of the project appeared almost 15 years ago from kitchen conversations in which we fantasized about the art of the future. In one of these conversations, we came up with a work of art which does not physically exist. Continuing the tradition of artists announcing the end of art started by Kazimir Malevich with his Black Square and supported by Timur Novikov with his Zero-object, we came up with launching an imaginary point in geocentric orbit. At that time when the computer seemed to be a luxury, the project seemed fantastic. Our imagination drew that to monitor this point, working sites like the MCC, the Flight Control Centers of the Space Ships, would be needed, and the radio and television broadcasters were to announce the arrival of the point as a significant cultural event. Today, when the power of computers of that time easily fit in our pocket, we offer to join the dream of our youth and jointly participate in the experiment proposed further.
In this work, we want to work with the imagination as with the material. If only that which we observe together objectively exists, can we assume that the abstract point, which is jointly observed by our imagination, exists objectively?
During the action, an imaginary point with predetermined speed and direction of flight was launched into a near-earth orbit.
- Starting point: 59.911645 N 30.33086 E - Moscow district, St. Petersburg, Quay of the Bypass channel, 74 lit. C, Planetarium number 1
- Flight speed: 82 m / s
We have created a website http://www.dot-in.space where anyone can observe the passage of a point in geocentric orbit. In addition, this application was created, which allows you to register a point directly in the area of its passage. At the moment when the observer will be in the area through which the point passes, he will receive a notification with the message: "A point has passed through you"
In order for the experimental data to be obtained correctly, you need to properly configure the application to work.
Please check the following points:
1. Make sure that the application is linked to geolocation. To do this, go to the settings of your smartphone, find the section "Applications". In the section find the DotMap application. In the "Application Settings" section you need to allow him to send you notifications and location determination.
2. In the "General settings", in the "Date and time" section, enable "Auto-detect time"
3. In order for a point to be registered even in those moments when you are not waiting for it, the application must work in the background.
For further statistical data processing, we ask all volunteers to report cases of registration of the point, the time and place where it happened.
Information about the place, please send in the form of geographical coordinates, which can be found in the application or on the site of Google Map or Yandex.kart services.
Encouraged to attach photos, video and audio materials, as well as any other materials accompanying the moment of observation.
