Red and Black is a novel by Stendhal (1783-1842), published in mid-November 1830. The plot unfolds in France in the late 1820s, and is articulated around a young man's ambitions to rise about the poverty of his birth. The title of the book could refer to the colors of the uniforms of the army (red) and of the priests (black).
