About Sober

The Brazilian Society of Business Administration and Rural Sociology is a non-profit civil society founded on February 19, 1959 during the 1st Biannual Meeting of Rural Economists, being then called the Brazilian Society of Rural Economists
(SOBER).

Sober was only fully formed on February 23, 1960, during the II Meeting of Rural Economists in Brazil, held at the facilities of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation and the Federation of Industries, in Rio de Janeiro. On that occasion, the company's first statute was discussed and approved and the first board was elected.

The founding partners signed their constitution minutes, that is, all those who participated in the first two meetings, totaling 44 rural economists, who acted as professors at the main Brazilian universities, professionals from research and extension institutions such as Fundação Getúlio Vargas, Rural Economy of the Ministry of Agriculture, Institute of Agricultural Economics of the Secretariat of Agriculture of the State of São Paulo,
credit cooperative associations, Banco do Nordeste, among others.

At this II Biannual Meeting of Rural Economists in Brazil, the association's first statute was also approved. The Minutes of Constitution of Sober were registered at the Civil Registry of Legal Entities of Viçosa, Minas Gerais, under nº 1573, on June 2, 1961. From the VI Meeting, the meetings started to be annual and were held without interruption since then. Sober grew during this phase, having today around 550 active partners and around 900 in total.

SOBER recently completed Sixty Years of existence, marked by the intense and continuous discussion of the intellectual production of its members and by contributions to public policies for agriculture. This trajectory of research and debate was marked by economic changes, by changes in the political and institutional framework, by science and technology and agricultural development policies and, above all, by the dominant paradigms and views in the economy, administration and rural sociology. Thus, the consultation of the proceedings of Sober congresses shows how it has debated and contributed to the resolution of the problems of agriculture, agribusiness and rural areas in Brazil in recent decades.

Sober's history is also confused with that of teaching, research and extension institutions and with graduate education in Brazil. Since its first meetings, Sober has opened space for the discussion of teaching techniques, course programs, extension plans, among other subjects, contributing to the structuring and consolidation of rural Economy, Administration and Sociology in national universities.

The membership of the society housed important researchers and teachers, some of whom also had political careers and held positions in the public structure of teaching, research and extension and in organs of the executive branch, such as ministries and secretariats of agriculture. These names can be found in the gallery of members and highlights.

The main vehicles for disseminating SOBER's scientific production have been the Revista de Economia e Sociologia Rural and the Proceedings of the Brazilian Congress on Economics, Administration and Rural Sociology, the most important annual event in the area in Brazil.
