“Telesmile mobile application” is dedicated to provide an efficient solution to improve the knowledge regarding the oral health care and oral hygiene practice for the individuals with disability such as visual impairment (blindness), Deafness, Mental retardation, Autism and Down syndrome in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.” The use of this application will provide the scientifically proven oral health awareness information to the disabled community which are regularly updated under the supervision of the experts in their related fields.
Generally, oral hygiene practice training is provided by utilizing various visual materials in consideration of the characteristics of people with the disabilities. However, since such training is a one-time event and is conducted in a unified format, it is not possible to form correct oral health maintenance habits in daily life. Moreover, the visual materials used in such training and learning have limitations in engaging and motivating people with disabilities to learn tooth-brushing patterns, and difficulties sustaining the effectiveness of learning. Therefore, the “Telesmile mobile application” is planned to outline the effectiveness of the approach of “teledentistry” to improve the oral health status among the disabled patients in general as well as during the COVID-19 pandemic crisis. With the usage of smartphones, it is possible to perform “teledentistry,” a new concept to render dental care across distance. “Telesmile mobile application” could aid the dental community by covering a broader geographical area, enabling more efficient functioning and helping many disabled people in need while maintaining social distancing. The application will provide an efficient solution to improve the knowledge regarding the oral health care and oral hygiene practice for mainly the five disabled communities such as visual impairment (blindness), deafness, mental retardation, autism and Down syndrome in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Each disable community contains specified instructions related to oral health and oral hygiene practice related to the tooth brushing, dental flossing, use of mouth wash, dietary habits and regular dental visits.
