Buddhism (zh. 佛教, sa. Buddhasasana, pi. Buddhasasana, bo. Sangs rgyas སངས་ རྒྱས་ བསྟན་ པ་ bstan pa) is an atheistic religion consists of a variety of traditions, beliefs and methods of cultivation set based on the teachings of a historical character as Gautama Buddha (zh. 悉達多 瞿曇, sa. Siddhartha Gautama, pi. Siddhattha Gotama). Gautama Buddha is often called Buddha-da, Buddha-da (sa., Pi. Buddha), referred to as the Buddha, or Buddha, which means "awakened", "enlightened" . According to Buddhist texts and archaeological material has proven, Gautama Buddha lived and preached in eastern India from about the 6th century BC to the 4th century BC.

After Gautama Buddha's death, Buddhism began differentiation into many branches and many ideologies, with many differences from baseline. Theravada branch (or Theravada Buddhism, Theravada, Mahayana often called the "Theravada") and Development Branch (or Mahayana, Mahayana Buddhism Mahayana). Primitive Buddhism flourished in Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia (Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar.) Mahayana Buddhism development in East Asia (China, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Singapore) and including many smaller branching like Pure Land, Zen, Tibetan Buddhism, Shingon, Tiantai. Also, according to some classifications, 3rd branch is Tantric (Vajrayana), developed in Tibet and Mongolia, but, according to some other classification shall be classified in Tantric Mahayana.

Although developed mainly in Asia, but is now found in Buddhism throughout the world. Estimated number of Buddhists in about 350 million to 1.6 billion people.
