For a long time, in one way or another, indigenous peoples and local communities have sought to conserve their territories and lands. Formerly, and still today, indigenous peoples maintain all or some of their institutions and management practices for their territories. However, growing pressures force them to combine traditional with modern techniques to cope with restrictions on the use of space and changes in cultures.

In this context, it is necessary to understand territorial management as the process of making collective decisions aimed at maintaining the territories under the power of indigenous peoples and local communities.
