The first documentary attestation of the city of Deva dates back to 1269, but the archaeological discoveries made in the area of the Fortress Hill, show that the territory of the city has been inhabited since the time of the polished stone (5500-3500 BC). The oldest discoveries of this kind belong to the Neolithic Turdaş - Vinca culture and the Coţofeni culture.
Nowadays, Deva occupies a first place as an importance between the five municipalities of Hunedoara county, being an important political, administrative and cultural center, as well as the place of residence of the county.
It is located in the central part of the county, at 45 * 53 'north latitude and 22 * 54' east longitude, at an altitude between 187 - 220 m above sea level, between the Apuseni Mountains and the Poiana Ruscă Mountains. The city has developed in a picturesque natural setting, on the left bank of the Mureş river, benefiting from its glorious meadow, as well as the rich mineral resources of the metalliferous and gold-bearing mountains that surround it.
