To reclaim the open spaces in Mitchells Plain and create an enabling environment for our children to play.
Mission statement
To collect new and used sporting equipment to be distributed to beneficiary schools and clubs in the Mitchells Plain area and to use sport as a catalyst to combat social ills and to bring about social transformation.
About Us
Strategic Objectives
1 To reclaim our open spaces in Mitchells Plain and to allow our children to play in an environment free of intimidation;
2 To use sport to teach children important life skills such as discipline, perseverance, team work, compassion, etc.
3 To develop the inherent / precocious talent of young sportsmen and women in the Mitchells area;
4 To keep young people occupied with positive and constructive time-passing activities i.e. sport and cultural activities;
5 To expose our children to a variety of sporting codes that are not endemic to the Mitchells Plain area;
6 To partner with businesses and other organisations with similar objectives to provide the requisite equipment needed for our children to participate in sport;
7 To build more cohesive and compassionate communities
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF CAMPAIGN
The Mitchells Plain residential area has been marred by a proliferation in gang activities, associated drug and substance abuse, dysfunctional families, violence and the loss of human lives. This is a matter of public record and has been widely reported in the media. So many young lives and dreams are destroyed by the scourge that has become endemic in less affluent areas. This has left the community demoralised and in pain.
The Unchain the Plain Campaign was conceptualised by five individuals with an unbridled passion for the well-being of the Mitchells Plain community. All of us were raised and educated in the Mitchells Plain area. We could no longer stand by and allow a small percentage of individuals hold and entire community hostage. The objective of the campaign is to reclaim our open spaces and to create an enabling environment for our children to play.
We want to use sport as a catalyst to combat social ills and to bring about social transformation. We want to rebuild the moribund image of our beloved Mitchells Plain community, a people that is inherently good. It is our considered view that a child in sport is a child out of court. Sport teaches young people discipline, teamwork, perseverance, respect and many other attributes that are needed to succeed in life. We want to produce good human beings first and then good sportsmen and women. There is also empirical evidence pointing to a positive relationship between sport and academic performance.
Unchain the Plain is an apolitical campaign that will partner with any other organisations and people that have similar objectives and have the interest of the community at heart. We want to foster a culture of giving and compassion. Help us to nurture the precocious talent within the Mitchells Plain community and to keep our youth occupied with positive and constructive time-passing activities. Our aim is to collect new and used sporting equipment that will be donated to beneficiary schools and clubs in the Mitchells Plain area. Our role is to facilitate the transfer of ownership. Where substantial cash donations are received, it must be paid directly to the beneficiary school or club.
