CanDo – The answer to “What can I do?”
Do you need help but find it difficult to ask? Maybe you want to help but don’t know how?
CanDo is a FREE app that is the bridge between people going through treatment for cancer and their team of willing helpers. The CanDo app coordinates team and task management, without awkward conversations.
WE’RE BACKED BY THE BEST
CanDo is not-for-profit and proudly supported by the Garvan Research Foundation. The Garvan is Australia’s pre-eminent medical research institution, working at the cutting edge of life saving discoveries in cancer research.
THE APP HAS FOUR MAIN FUNCTIONS
1. Team building
2. Task management
3. Updates
4. Info
TEAM BUILDING
Users or their appointed admins can invite known friends or family to join their team via email or Facebook. The team members who accept are then asked to download the app and register.
Team members can help provide practical day-to-day support, or simply be kept informed within a closed, private environment. Most likely, your team will be your family, closest friends and other people who have proactively asked how they can help. But how many people you invite into the team is entirely up to you!
TASK MANAGEMENT
Team leaders and admins can create tasks, either using the suggested list or create customised entries. Set a date, time and choose whether you want a specific person to help you, or request help from anyone in the team who is available to assist. All team members can comment on tasks, to ensure they fully understand what is required. Team members accept the tasks they can help with and save that task as an appointment inside their calendar. Team members only see the tasks available to “anyone” and tasks they have accepted.
UPDATES
Your friends and family want to know how you’re doing but it can be exhausting responding to multiple calls or messages and you may not feel comfortable posting private information on to social media. In Updates, team leaders and admins can keep their entire team up to speed with how things are going. You can post fun photos or a doctor’s update, let people know when you can have visitors, or tell them if you prefer some space for a few days.
INFO
Here you’ll find useful content for people going through treatment, and for their support team. From “What do you say to someone who has cancer?” to articles around maintaining general wellness, the financial implications of being away from work, how to navigate relationships during treatment and after, guest posts from people going through treatment, and the latest innovations in medical research from The Garvan and other institutions…over time we’ll be building a library of content of interest to our users.
WHO DEVELOPED CANDO?
CanDo was developed by a former cancer patient who personally understands the unique problems experienced by cancer patients experiencing surgeries, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and the sometimes rocky journey towards recovery.
OUR MISSION
By providing CanDo, FREE, to people going through treatment, we want them to get the help they need and experience positive outcomes throughout and at the end of their treatment phase.
CanDo can deliver a number of positive social and practical benefits to improve quality of life throughout treatment and beyond. These can include:
- Less social isolation
- Greater personal autonomy
- A reduction in the financial impact of stopping work
- More attention on general well-being
- Reducing the impact of stress and anxiety by removing concerns about how the “little things” get done
For the supporter team, CanDo offers them the chance to feel that they did something meaningful for their loved one. People genuinely want to help, but they need someone to give them “a job”. CanDo takes care of this!
