About NPMS Public Viewer

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s (PHMSA) National Pipeline Mapping System (NPMS) has developed the NPMS Public Viewer iPhone app to allow the public to view hazardous liquid and gas transmission pipeline maps. The user can see who operates a pipeline, what it transports, and who to contact for further information. To get started, a user may choose one county or offshore area (including state waters or federal waters) or choose to see pipelines closest to the user’s current location. For more information about the NPMS, or to access the full desktop browser version of the NPMS Public Map Viewer, go to the NPMS website at https://www.npms.phmsa.dot.gov/.

Excellent app

We’re glad we found this app a few years ago. We understand that the public can’t zoom in too close on pipelines due to security issues, but it shows you what’s in your area, including hazardous chemical pipelines, and incidents, such as spills, that you might not know otherwise. We even had a reporter reach out to us when there was an explosion and injuries at a facility that didn’t appear on the state’s oil and gas map because the state doesn’t oversee it (nor do states oversee pipelines). It was on this map in that county. We’ve shared screenshots multiple times for many purposes and regularly recommend it.

Please Update ASAP

This app has been out for 4 years. While it does give notice, the fact that you can’t zoom in below 2000 meters without losing “NPMS data” means an update is well past due. The error popup (which simply says “error”) prevents any successful query. It also appears to be intermittent, but that alone is enough for an immediate uninstall. As it is, this app is not of much use.
