About ZeroPhobia - Fear of Heights

What is ZeroPhobia?

ZeroPhobia helps people to conquer their fear of heights. Developed by a team of leading psychologists and therapists from VU University Amsterdam and the University of Twente, ZeroPhobia offers a complete treatment program. All you need is some time, your smartphone and a basic virtual reality viewer (e.g., Google Cardboard). Our mission is to make evidence-based treatment simple, accessible and affordable.

What you will get

ZeroPhobia is a complete self-help program. A virtual therapist guides you through every step of the program. Six engaging modules provide you with information about the nature of your fear, how to deal with it, setting goals, getting through difficult moments, tackling negative thoughts and practicing with challenging situations. You will practice in a way that is challenging yet completely safe in a gamified virtual reality environment.

For whom?

ZeroPhobia is meant for anyone who suffers from fear of heights and wants to do something about it. Although fear of heights can also be effectively treated with traditional therapy, for many people getting treatment is difficult due to the high costs or time constraints. ZeroPhobia allows you to get rid of your fear in your own time and at a fraction of the cost of regular treatment. Our goal is to make treatment accessible and affordable.

Research and scientific background

ZeroPhobia is based on exposure and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), also known as exposure therapy, which has shown to be very effective in treating fears like fear of heights. The effectiveness of ZeroPhobia was recently tested by a team of researchers led by Dr. Tara Donker from VU University. 193 people suffering from fear of heights participated in this randomized controlled trial. The results of the trial show that ZeroPhobia is very effective in reducing fear of heights. See our website (www.zerophobia.app) for more information about this research.

More gradual theater experience, please.

I’ve been using the app and in general, I like it and it has helped me some with my significant fear of heights. What I’m struggling with is the virtual experience between the second and third module. The first two are situations approximating what feels like 8 - 12 feet above the ground. The third situation simulates 25+ feet WITHOUT an option to stop, take a break and/or climb back down when the increasing height becomes too much returning the next time to go a little bit higher. It’s all 25+ feet or nothing! 😳😬 I feel that is quite an unrealistic jump for people with a fear of heights. That said, I am stuck on module 3 and not able to progress. Yikes!

So far so good

Downloaded the app and paid. So far i am very happy with experience. What they say aligned with studies on panic disorders and i researched a bunch. But it made me kinda nauseous using the app. Going to try to go slow. Took off one star but not because of the app but because of getting nauseous/VR
