About Museum of the Hidden City

Walking Cinema: Museum of the Hidden City is a pop-up museum in San Francisco presenting 80 years of housing history in one of the most beautiful and turbulent housing markets in the country. The museum is centered around 5 smartphone walking tours that combine audio, maps, GPS, and augmented reality to immerse audiences in pivotal stories from San Francisco's housing history. Audiences will find artifacts from these stories housed in shops and community spaces along the route. The Museum is meant to be experienced in person and the app will give you directions, but if you can't go to San Francisco, the content can also be experienced at home.

Currently, the app contains the first chapter in the series, "The Fillmore: Total Planning." This chapter looks at one of the largest urban renewal projects in our nation's history. One that supposed to uplift citizens from economic and racial injustice. It was meant to improve the business environment in the city and show the nation what a utopia San Francisco is. In many ways it did the opposite. You'll hear this story from the perspective of a preacher's daughter and an architect who were on the front lines of the development and are still grappling with the impact of the endeavor.

The project is supported by the Kenneth Rainin Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities, along with many merchants and community organizations who agreed to house artifacts in this Museum of the Hidden City.
