Learning to read using sight words is a very common practice for the English language. The theory is that if children learn to identify these very high frequency words very quickly, they will know how to read the majority of the text in a book and they would be left with less words to decode. If you ever wondered how to teach your child to read, this method is proven to work great.
There are several lists published on Sight words for different age groups.
The two most notable lists are:
- Dolch Sight Words - organized in lists for pre-primer, primer, grade 1, grade 2, grade 3 and nouns
- Fry Sight Words - in 10 lists of 100 words
