About Digiväylä

Outokumpu Digiväylä mobile app

Experience rocks in Finnish soil and the mining history of Outokumpu in a whole new way!

In augmented reality, you can view different rock types of Finnish soil and along the Kummunkatu Geological time scale based on their historical date of birth. One application presents nostalgic images of Kummunkatu during the 20th century, another AR application highlights different soil rock types as an AR pillar formation rising from the earth's crust in Eero Mäkinen's stone park and the third AR application outlines the mining techniques during the years of active mining in Outokumpu. The digital mobile app will be released on 21.1.2021 making it available for free download in app stores.

After you have downloaded the application on your device it can be used with assisting QR-codes which launch the AR-contents. AR content works on all the latest mobile devices. You can distinguish the Geological time scale marked on Kummunkatu road structure as a black and white nubile mosaic paving on the edge of pedestrian walkway. By following it, you can easily stay on the timescale.

The application's nostalgic picture carousel is situated opposite the S-Market parking area on the other side of Kummunkatu near the roundabout. You can have the best user experience of AR stone pillars on the edge of Eero Mäkinen's stone park and the third AR point is situated near the entrance of museum tunnel, which presents the excavation of different eras - the signs will guide the pedestrian along the way and there are three highlighted and numbered information plates near the AR points which have the AR triggering QR-codes to launch the experience.

The contents of the application have been created in collaboration with the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK), the Outokumpu Mining Museum and mining enthusiasts from Outokumpu.

Hurja Solutions and 3D Talo from Kuopio are responsible for the technical implementation of the application. The application has been produced in a project managed by the City of Outokumpu, which has been leveraged with EU Structural Funds with co-funding from the North Karelia Regional Council and with the support of Outokumpu City Group’s affiliate companies.
