The VMMA has been developed measuring and comparing the performance of crew transfer vessels (CTV’s) when transiting wind farm technicians offshore, and when transferring to offshore structures. A dedicated login feature allows pre-approved users to record and share specific ‘transit’ and ‘transfer’ P-Plots through the app and associated web portal. Users can evaluate a CTV motion and performance in various sea states. This in turn can facilitate operations and maintenance (O&M) optimisation through increased understanding of vessel capabilities and performance.
Despite the app being developed primarily for the offshore wind sector, there is still numerous applications across the wider maritime industry. The basic functionality of the app (which does not require a specific login) allows a user to display and record vessel attitude, acceleration, speed, position and course using the sensors within a smartphone or tablet device. This data can then be saved and exported to be further analysed by the user.
The Vessel Motion Monitoring App (VMMA) has been developed through the Offshore Wind Accelerator (OWA), Carbon Trust’s flagship collaborative RD&D programme, with support from Enigma Interactive and Seaspeed Marine Consultants. The accuracy of the data provided by the app has been validated against a permanent Vessel Motion Monitoring System through a rigorous offshore testing process, it is not however intended to replace these dedicated systems or being used for contractual purposes.
It’s basic functionality includes:
• Input and store individual vessel details.
• Monitor and record vessel motion in six degrees of freedom.
• Record GPS & speed.
• Record can then be stored and exported from the app.
• Wave buoy tool.
Advanced App Functions include (requires login):
• Monitor and record transit and transfer performance of vessels.
• Transit trials are used to measure comfort (motion) of vessels at operational speeds.
• Transfer trials are used to measure performance of vessels whilst engaged in personal transfer.
Login credentials have been provided to relevant users undertaking transit and transfer trials. For more information please see login page in the app.
