About Clon Minotaur Overdrive

Clon Minotaur Transparent Overdrive is modeled on The Klon Centaur* a guitar overdrive pedal developed between 1990 and 1994. The Clon Minotaur is characterized as a "transparent" overdrive, meaning it adds gain to the signal without significantly altering the tone of the guitar.

Depending on the settings of the control knobs, the Clon Minotaur Transparent Overdrive can act mostly as a clean boost, adding mostly volume and minimal coloring to the sound. This can be used to drive the input valve stage of the virtual amplifier to use the characteristic distortion sound of an overdriven guitar amp.

Clon Minotaur Transparent Overdrive controls can be set to distort the sound signal in the plugin, where two modeled germanium diodes can perform waveform clipping.

The gain parameter controls the balance between the modeled diode clipping stage and the clean stage. The two signals are summed together before they interact with the other two controls, treble and volume.

Works as a standalone app, AudioUnit v3 effect, or Inter-App Audio effect

Really quite good!

There are many overdrive effects out there but I keep coming back to this one for a few reasons. One being that it’s versatile yet in a simple 3-knob layout. I particularly like how the “drive” knob level mixes in with the clean signal. It is like transparent overdrives but the summing just has good tonal quality and as increased, pulls back the harsher high-mid frequencies and pushes the diode clipping into the mix non-linearly, which I like in this case. The tone knob mix-summing seems very similar to the drive effect, only with tone. (obviously) I use it a lot so I figured I’d write a review. Thanks for the awesome free plugins!
